Enjoyed sitting down with Ellis Marsalis at the Grove Park Inn's All That Jazz Weekend this Saturday afternoon to moderate a Q&A with the audience. Among our topics: discipline in jazz education, his favorite foods, locales and jazz pianists, and his family legacy. An incredibly gracious man, I found him to be uncompromising in his insistence on technical mastery—unsurprising given all I've heard Wynton say over the years. He did surprise me in expressing a real liking for the playing of Keith Jarrett (!)—surely he's read what Jarrett has written about his son over the years?
